How to Knit a Fishermans Rib Baby Blanket [Free Video Tutorial & Written Pattern!]

This beautiful Fisherman’s Rib baby blanket is incredibly soft and textured, and is a great modern project for any baby gift. It has a built in Garter Stitch edging which helps the ribbed middle section stand out even further.

I wish that I could show you through a computer screen just how squishy this blanket is, but I can’t.

So you’re just going to have to take my word for it when I tell you that this blanket is one of the softest and squishiest blankets I’ve knitted.

Something about the double thickness the knit 1 below gives just elevates this blanket to a different level of softness.

yarn sizing tips and tricks

I’ve chosen DK (aka Double Knitting, Light Worsted, 3 Weight) yarn for this project, but don’t let that stop you from knitting it in your own preferred weight of yarn. You will just need to adjust your cast on and number of repeats you work to accommodate the change in weight of yarn.

My instructions produce a Blanket approximately 60cm x 80cm, but the beauty of this blanket is there is NO pattern repeat, you just cast on an ODD number of stitches, and off you go. Ideal for when you really don’t want to have to sit and work out how many stitches you need to achieve the perfect size.

Materials Needed:

• 4mm Circular Needs (to recreate this blanket 80cm is a perfect length)
• Sirdar Hayfield Bonus DK in shade Lagoon Blue – Approx 300g.
• Tapestry Needle for sewing in ends
• 2 Stitch Markers (Optional if you wish to mark where the side edging should be knitted)

Stitches Used:

• k – knit
• p – purl
• k1b – knit one below

Written Pattern:

Cast on Row: Using your preferred cast on method (I use long-tail cast on), cast on 115 Stitches.

Bottom Edging: k 13 rows.

Row 1 (Right Side): k6, *p1, k1b* Repeat *to* until 7 Stitches remain. P1, k6.

Row 2 (Wrong Side): k6, *k1b, p1* Repeat *to* until 7 Stitches remain, k1b, k6

Rest of Blanket: Repeat rows 1 & 2 until your blanket is the length you desire (before edging – this adds about 4cm to the length). Making sure to finish with a right side row.

Top Edging: k 11 rows.

Final Row: Cast off knit wise.
