How to Crochet Moss Stitch (aka Linen & Granite Stitch)
Learn how to crochet Moss Stitch with me. This lovely dense stitch is great for both small projects like wash cloths, and bigger projects like baby blankets – it particularly lends itself to bold striped blanket using chunky blocks of colour.
Stitches Used:
- ch – chain
- sc – single crochet
written pattern
Foundation Row:
- Chain an ODD number of Stitches
Row 1:
- sc into 3rd ch from hook
- ch1
- skip a ch and work sc into next ch along.
- *ch1, skip a ch, work sc into next* Repeat from *to* until end of row.
- ch1. TURN
Row 2:
- sc into ch1 gap from row below
- ch1
- skip next sc and work sc into next ch1 gap from row below
- Repeat step 3 until last sc
- work last sc into turning ch from row below.
- ch1. TURN
Row 3 (Repeat Row):
- sc into ch1 gap from row below
- ch1
- skip next sc and work sc into next ch1 gap from row below
- Repeat step 3 until last sc
- work last sc into ch1 turn from row below.
- ch1. TURN
Repeat Row 3 until your project is complete. If you wish to change colours then please refer to instructions below.
Changing Colour
Changing colour is a simple process, you just need to work these two rows before you go back to your normal one row repeat that you’ve been working when not changing colours.
Row 1:
- Finish last sc of row with new colour. ch2, TURN
- sc into ch1 gap from row below
- ch1
- skip next sc and work sc into next ch1 gap from row below
- Repeat step 3 until last sc
- work last sc into ch1 turn from row below.
- ch1. TURN
Row 2:
- sc into ch1 gap from row below
- ch1
- skip next sc and work sc into next ch1 gap from row below
- Repeat step 3 until last sc
- work last sc into 1st ch from ch2 in from row below.
- ch1. TURN
