How to Knit the Open Star Stitch [Free Video Tutorial & Written Pattern!]

The Open Star Stitch is a lovely, textured vintage knitting pattern that creates a beautifully textured design.

Consisting of just a 4 row repeat, the Open Star Stitch is an easy to learn pattern that’s suitable for adventurous beginners or any knitter than loves loads of texture in a project.

Open Star Stitch is not a reversible pattern, it has a definite right and wrong side which means you shouldn’t use it in a project that looks the same on both sides. I’ve attached a photo of the reverse side below so you can see the difference.

When you’re knitting this stitch try to make sure that you keep your tension relatively nice and loose so that the texture the stitch pattern creates isn’t hidden by your stitches being too tight.

There’s no need to add selvedge stitches to this design if you don’t want to. It lays perfectly flat and doesn’t curl at either the top or bottom. Always a plus in my books!
