How to Knit the “Sasha” Baby Blanket  [Free Video Tutorial & Written Pattern!]

***You can purchase an INEXPENSIVE AD-FREE PDF of this pattern on Ravelry HERE or Etsy HERE***

As knitted baby blankets go, Sasha is an absolute classic. Simple blocks of stockinette and reverse stockinette create sleek, modern stripes. This combination also results in a reversible pattern – something I know a lot of knitters look for when making baby blankets.

For this particular blanket I’ve gone for a soft, gender neutral pale grey. But I think it would work in any colour you wanted to use – even using a variegated yarn would work really well.

Although the pattern repeat is 20 rows long, its probably one of the simplest designs you could knit without opting for something like Garter Stitch or a plain stockinette stitch. I’ve listed each individual row in my pattern instructions, and there is a YouTube Video Tutorial for you to follow along to if you prefer to have something visual to work along with rather than a traditional written pattern.

yarn and sizing tips & tricks

The Sasha baby blanket pattern is knitted all in one piece, from bottom to top. In order to accommodate all your stitches, I recommend using a set of circular needles (at least 100cm long) as straight needles just won’t be long enough to fit your stitches on comfortably.

I’ve chosen DK (aka Double Knitting, Light Worsted, 3 Weight) yarn for this project, but don’t let that stop you from knitting it in your own preferred weight of yarn.

My instructions produce a baby blanket approximately 60cm x 80cm, perfect for using as a cot, pram or travel blanket. But don’t let that stop you from knitting this blanket in any size you want! I think it would look great scaled up as a Sofa Throw, Quilt or Bedspread!

I’ve deliberately designed this knitting pattern to be super easy for you to adjust the size of your blanket to whatever size you want/need.

To make the blanket longer, you’ll need to work more repeats of the Middle Section (the top and bottom border are worked the same regardless of the size of blanket you knit).

To adjust the width of your blanket you’ll need to cast on more (or indeed less) stitches, the beauty of this knitting pattern is there is NO set repeat. Just cast on as many or few stitches as you want, and start knitting. I’ve allowed 18 stitches for my garter stitch edging (9 for each side).

  1. I have only recently discovered your wonderful patterns and I get excited every time I see a new one. I have knitted more baby blankets than I can remember and have made them for my grandchildren and the children, grandchildren and great grandchildren of many friends and extended family. I also knit prayer shawls and have adapted many baby blanket patterns to make them. All of these projects are given away. Thank you for so much inspiration and new ways to use my extensive yarn stash!

  2. Good morning! I am knitting your lovely Sasha afghan.
    I have a question, please.
I am on line 11. Your directions say to knit this row.
When line 10 is knitted it creates a purl row on the right side .
When row 11 is knitted, it creates a knitted row space between rows 10 and 12.
Should that be a purl row?
I appreciate your input and help.
    Thank you!
PS: I am knitting this afghan with a DK bamboo yarn and it will be gorgeous! Thank you, again for your help.

    1. Hi!

The instructions are correct, the sections of stockinette and reverse stockinette have a little separating row between them 🙂

      Thanks

      Laurelin

  5. Thanks a lot for kindly sharing your creations! I’m a beginner knitter and this is my first baby blanket, I’m enjoying knitting the Sasha pattern 🙂
May I ask you what is your preferred way to join a new yarn?
